Ware Escapes with 16-7 Victory Over Statesboro

The Ware County Gators were able to overcome a bunch of adversity on the road and come away with a hard fought 16-7 win over Statesboro Friday night. The Gators were coming off a bye week and fall break as they prepared for the first Region test of the season. The fact that it was a road game made it more difficult to get into a rhythm. Any football game can be broken down into three phases....offense....defense....and speacial teams. Excelling in all three all but guarantees a victory. Excelling in two of the three often gives the team a good chance to win. Performing poorly in all three is hard to overcome. The Ware County Defense played lights out the entire game. Statesboro had the ball inside the Ware County 35 yard line on four different occasions in the first half and came up with no points. The Blue Devils were also 0-for-5 on fourth down conversions in the game and a fourth quarter defensive safety put the game out of reach for the Blue Devils. Despite muffing a punt return on Statesboro's first punt, the Special Teams of the Gators were spot on as they kept the Blue Devils backed up on punts and were true on both point after touchdown attempts.

Following the mishandled punt, the Gator Defense set the stage for what would be a stellar performance as they held the Blue Devils on downs and gave the offense the ball on their own 26 yard line. Ware methodically moved the chains down the field before QB Thomas Castellano connected with Keonte Taylor for a 39 yard TD strike. Brody Hall's point after was good and the Gators led 7-0. The Blue Devils responded with their only drive of the night that resulted in points as Jaylen Roberson scored from 1 yard out. A point after tied the game 7-7 just before halftime.

Halftime gave the Gators a chance to get refocused. Ware got the kickoff in the second half and traded punts with Statesboro before putting together a drive that led to a mid third quarter score by Castellano. Brody Hall added the point after and Ware took the lead for good. The Ware defense then came up with a big interception at mid field but were unble to mount a drive that was plagued with several penalties which forced the Gators to punt. A Conor Brennan punt was downed on the one yard line and the defense sealed the victory for the Gators as LaDedrick Castellano tackled Roberson in the endzone for the saftey. This put the Gators up 16-7 and nailed the door shut.

Although the offense struggled to find it's rhythm, most of the problems were the result of good defense on Statesboro's part. But it was the Gator Defense that played a little better and Ware moved to 1-0 in region play.
