The Ware County Gators avenged an earlier loss to Brantley County by taking the Herons to double overtime before winning the game 89-88 in one of the most exciting games in recent years. The Gators trailed the Herons 11-10 after the first quarter. Brantley extended the lead in the second quarter with a 18-14 run to take a 30-24 halftime lead. The Gators grabbed the lead in the third quarter outscoring Brantley 23-10 in the period to take a 47-39 lead into the fourth. Brantley ralled in the fourth outscoring the Gators 24-15 to send the game into overtime. Both team scored 15 points in the first overtime period but the Gators muscled their way in the final overtime edging the Herons 11-10 to take the game 89-88.
Zak Swinson led the Gators in scoring with 24 points including 7 three pointers and 3 of 4 from the free throw line. Byron McKelvin added 22 points whle Rock Taylor had 10. DJ Harris and Jamon Holmes each had 9 points while Chalum Harris added 7 and Thomas Castellanos added two points.
The Gators open up Region play Friday January 4th at home as they host Wayne County at 7:30.
The JV Boys game also went into overtime as the Gators held on to take the game 49-48. The Gators trailed 12-6 after the first and 16-10 at the break before outscoring the Herons in both the third and fourth quarter to send the game to overtime where the Gators rallied and played great defense.
Seven Gators scored for Ware as Cletwan Screven led the way with 8 points. Jaylin Melvin, Thomas Castellanos, Zak Swinson each added 6 points while TJ Denson added 5 and Jolyn James scored two points.
The Gators will host Wayne County at 5:00 on Friday, January 4th in the Swamp.
