The Ware County Gators soccer team won a tough region match against New Hampstead tonight, 3-2, to finish 4-4 in the region, securing a 3 seed in the State Playoffs.
Visiting New Hampstead opened the scoring with an effective counter attack only 2 minutes into the match to take a 1-0 lead. Ten minutes later, Ware would equalize, when Julio Nataren fed a pass to Yerlin Guardado, who struck a ball that the New Hampstead goal keeper bobbled, allowing Denzel Stephenson to strike it into the net. The match would go back and forth, and in the 14th minute, Yerlin Guardado would take a corner kick that was perfectly volleyed into the net by Justin Lucas, giving Ware the lead at 2-1. The match would hold at this scoreline until the half.
In the second half, the match was played evenly. In the 17th minute, Julio Nataren would collect a Ware throw in, and hit an outstanding shot from outside the 18 yard box past the New Hampstead keeper, giving Ware a 3-1 lead. New Hampstead wouldn't quit, however, and drew a goal back in the 13th minute, closing Ware's lead to 3-2. Ware was able to use solid defending, and offensive possession to see the match out to the end, with the final being 3-2.
"This was a tough win, but a win is a win, 3 is more than 2. We had some injuries to some key players in the last match against Wayne, and we needed some other guys to step up. It is nice to be heading back to the state playoffs, we should have to travel to either Union Grove or Locust Grove the last week of April. We have to travel to Glynn Academy on Wednesday for our final regular season match, and we will pretty much try to get out of that one as health as possible. We will then go to work getting ready for our first round playoff match. We appreciate the family and fans who have been so supportive this season, they have truly made a difference to our program."
