Excitement is certainly in the air this season as the Lady Gator Softball team will open up the 2017 campaign following an Elite 8 finish in 2016. The Lady Gators will be without graduates Emily Oliver, Alexis Trusty, Amber Holley, Kennedy Sanders and Region 2AAAAA Player of the year Lizzie Shubert, who will join former Ware standout Blake Crews at Stetson University in the fall, but the Lady Gators return a host of girls who made last year a special season including Bailee Stephens, Lauren Smallwood, Grace Link, Cullee Peavey, Haley Murray, D'Yonne McClain, Grace link Latreona Holmes, Sierra Taylor, Adrian Harris and Chyna Carter. Also joining the team are freshman Alyssa Crowe, Savannah Jeffers, Emma Millwood, Delaney Rodgers, Caroline Stafford and Avian Trull.
Junior Valerie Ortiz will return to the mound for the Lady Gators after posting an ERA last year of 1.746. Offensively, Ortiz had 80 At Bats, .287 avg, .463 OBP, .463 SLG%, 14 singles, 6 double, 1 triple, 2 homeruns.
It should be another exciting season for Lady Gator Softball and we hope the Gator Nation will come out and support our efforts. The JV team will host Lowndes County in a double header on Tuesday starting at 4:30 while the Varsity will host the Tift County Lady Blue Devils in a doubleheader on Thursday. First pitch is set for 4:00.
All faculty members are admitted free of charge with your ID badge, so bring your favorite chair and join the action this season in the Swamp.
