Four members of the thw Ware County Lady Gator Softball team were selected to the Region 2AAAAA All Region Team. They are listed below.
Sierra Taylor: Junior, Sierra Taylor was the Lady Gator's starting center fielder this year. She was a sight to see in most games as she would make some of the impossible catches. "She is quick and has the mentality of not letting any ball hit the ground. So, she certainly didn't mind making some beautiful diving catches", says Head Coach Rebecca Kirkland. Sierra's bat stayed hot this year as she lead her team in a .402 batting average. She was the leadoff batter for the Lady Gators and dangerous on the bases, leading her team in the most runs scored. Her on base percentage was a .462. "Sierra has so many things to offer at the plate. She can slap, bunt, and she can hit for power, as she had 2 homeruns this year as well", says Kirkland.
Valerie Ortiz: Senior, Valerie Ortiz was the Lady Gator's starting pitcher this year. She stood out tremendously on the mound. She pitched a total of 156 innings and totaling 157 strikeouts. "Val has great control on the mound. She is mentally tough and focused as she pitches. She certainly helped lead and contribute to our team's success this year", says Kirkland. Val's bat came in strong at times during the season. Her batting average was .305, but her on base percentage was .358. She tied with Taylor on leading her team with 7 doubles as well as tying with Lauren Smallwood with leading her team with 5 homeruns. She also contributed 22 RBIs this season. "Valerie is just a solid player all the way around. She is so fundamentally strong at the plate and defensively. Very proud of all of her accomplishments while being a Lady Gator", says Kirkland.
D'Yonne McClain: Junior, D'Yonne McClain was the Lady Gator's starting left fielder. "D'Yonne adds speed to the outfield for us. Having Sierra in center field and D'Yonne in left, certainly helped keep us in some games this year as big hits were taken away", says Kirkland. However, D'Yonne's bat stood out tremendously this season. She batted 6th for the Lady Gators this year. She had pop, power, and speed to add to the lineup. She finished the season with a .352 batting average as well as an on base percentage of .392. She had 5 doubles, 1 triple, and 3 homeruns. "D'Yonne was very productive at the plate this year. The ball comes off the bat hard when she makes a cut. She had a great year at the plate", says Kirkland.
Lauren Smallwood: Junior, Lauren Smallwood was the Lady Gator's starting catcher. Smallwood does a phenomenal job catching for the Lady Gators. "Having the Val-Smallwood duo has been great for the last 3 years. Val has lots of movement and Smallwood does a great job behind the plate catching her as well as framing those pitches up to grab those calls when needed. Not many players run on Smallwood as she also has a cannon behind the plate", says Kirkland. Smallwood also offers a lot at the plate. She is known for her power as she is the number 3 batter in the line-up. She ended the season with a .309 average and an on base percentage of .358. Smallwood led the team with Ortiz with a total of 5 homeruns. She also led this season with a total of 25 RBIs. "Lauren brings lots of power to the plate. She is very disciplined with her pitches. She is crucial for us when we have players in scoring position", says Kirkland.
